A geothermal heat pump or ground source heat pump (GSHP) is a central heating and/or cooling system that circulates treated water in polyethylene pipes installed in the ground. It uses the earth as a heat source (in the winter) or a heat sink (in the summer). Geothermal takes advantage of the moderate temperatures in the ground to eliminate burning harmful fossil fuels and reduces operational costs of heating and cooling your home. Conventional Geothermal is very cost effective to install in rural areas and ideal in properties that are able to contain two water wells. |
A direct exchange (DX) geothermal heat pump works on the same premises as Conventional Geothermal but circulate environmentally friendly refrigerant through copper tubing installed in the ground instead of a water based fluid. The refrigerant exchanges heat directly with the soil through the walls of the copper tubing similar to Conventional Geothermal. DX Geothermal has recently been accepted into the eco-Energy Retrofit Grant Program and has been quickly gaining popularity in the urban environment. DX Geothermal offers a cost effective and efficient alternative where property or lot size is limited. |
