Brighter Futures for Underprivileged Children

Local Cowboy Village School
PO Box 61297, Livingstone, Zambia, AFRICA

Three years ago, my wife and I traveled to a remote village in Livingston, Zambia (Africa) and volunteered at a small preschool that a local hero had built with his own savings.

Cliff Sitwala (the local cowboy hero), makes a living taking tourists on bicycle tours around the town of Livingston, home to one of the seven wonders of the world - Victoria Falls. After several years of hard work and saving, he decided to put his money to good use - to build brighter futures for the local underprivileged children of Livingston.

The purpose of this school is to provide a pre-school education to children aged 3-7 so they could learn the basics of reading, writing, counting, etc. to prepare them for grade school. Only when an African child reaches the age of 8 are they eligible to attend public school. This is often very costly for the parents and many cannot afford to send their children, or the children do not meet the minimum standards for education thus do not get accepted into Public School. Government funded Public School provide lunch everyday which they often do not get otherwise and the education offers the opportunity for African children to rise above the poverty that surrounds them.

Cowboy Cliff provides all the children with uniforms and a healthy lunch! To date there are 3 buildings (each houses 35 children), 6 volunteer teachers, 1 volunteer cook, a hand pump well for fresh water, outhouses and an outdoor kitchen – all are very basic, but they get the job done! There is a desk for each child as well as workbooks to practice their exercises in. In total 100+ children attend the school and each year, Cliff has to turn away many more as he does not have the facilities or funds to house them all.

Two years ago, we began sending over school supplies during the Christmas holidays. The first year, we sent 90 cahiers/books, pencils, erasers and pencil sharpeners. Last year we were able to send over more paper, scissors, coloured pens/markers, glue, erasers, pencils and a beautiful colour coffee table book highlighting Canada – to be used as a teaching tool.

Each year, we hope to increase our donations to Cliff and his school so we can help create brighter futures for the children of Livingston, Zambia. With your contribution, we can help Cliff realize his dream. Below is a list of items that Cliff has emailed us that would be very useful to aid in their learning environment. Geothermal Experts goal is provide everything listed below and more!!

  • Story books suitable for 4 to 7 years olds

  • Water colours and brushes for paintings

  • Wall charts or posters for the classrooms

  • Computers so that we can learn ourselves and teach our children too.

  • Photo copying machine

  • Toys for both boys & girls (indoor and outdoor)

  • Clothes for the children - gum boots, rain coats and warm clothes

Geothermal Experts will match your contribution dollar for dollar, up to a max of $200 - those who contribute sizable donations will be featured on our community webpage. Tax receipts will not be available for this organization as they are not an actual charity.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any contribution you may be able to offer. We would be happy to answer any questions and to provide more details on the Local Cowboy School so feel free to contact us!
